Bev Jozwiak, watercolor portrait

WORKSHOP IS FILLED. Registration is closed.

This workshop is a no-nonsense approach to watercolor. Focuses on answering many to the questions artists constantly ask. Why is my work muddy? How can I loosen up?

It is designed to help students at every skill level, to master techniques, design and color. Learn to paint boldly, think outside the box and paint outside the lines, with examples of basic color mixing including luscious greens, glowing white, great grays, and rich blacks. Develop good composition and strong values.

Focus on figures, animals (crows, roosters, cats, etc). Help with recipes for great skin tones, good ways to paint hair, how to choose good photographs to work from, and more.

Demos every day, with time for individual help.

Max Ginsburg has lived and worked in New York all his life. As a New Yorker, he feels a personal and deep connection to this rich, energetic, and beautiful city with its amazingly diverse population.

Max’s objective is to paint the people of New York, realistically and with compassion. He has expressed strongly held feelings about peace and justice; deep outrage to war, injustice, and torture are conveyed in some of his paintings. With regard to these themes, he has been inspired by Old Masters such as Caravaggio, Goya, Kollwitz, and Picasso.

Max has chosen to paint realistically because he believes that realism is truth and truth is beauty. He derive an aesthetic pleasure in skillfully done realistic drawings and paintings. Max believes that realism can communicate ideas strongly and it is this communication that is extremely important to him.

The marriage of watercolor with pen and ink can be magical.  In this two day workshop we will look at how to incorporate Pen and Ink in a dynamic watercolor painting.  On day one we will begin with looking at the different pen strokes and the ways pen techniques are used in a painting.  Then we will apply that to a piece to be completed with watercolor.  On day two we will explore textures and pen and ink in a more freestyle way.  We will create our own small watercolor journal to use with our pen and ink techniques.  I will demonstrate some tips and tricks on how to prepare a journal for future paintings.

Giraffe in style of Gustav Klimt by Karen Knutson

To register:  Click on red workshop title above to proceed to registration page

Learning different textures is the theme of this workshop. We will begin by preparing our papers in the Gustav Klimt painting method, dropping liquid acrylic on the paper, and then scraping it, using a credit card. We will develop these under-paintings into students' choice of subjects. Suggested subjects might be giraffes, dragonflies, or flowers, but students may pick whatever they want. One day, we will learn how to paint people, using the Gustav Klimt method. We will also be adding wire drawing to our paintings to bring them to completion. Wire Drawing is done using permanent black markers to look like a wire sculpture when completed. Abstract designs will be discussed and students will learn how wire drawings help ALL of their paintings be more complete and professional. Bring your favorite reference photos and get ready to loosen up!

The Freedom in Watermedia Workshop is designed to teach students to paint intuitively, starting without preconceived notions or outcome. There is no preliminary planning or drawing. The process will dictate direction as students use a variety of techniques to implement color, texture, line, shape and value. Instruction will start with arbitrary mark making and color application, working transparent to opaque, building layers using a variety of mark making tools, watercolor, gesso and acrylic. There will be regular comments and evaluation of work in progress concerning relationships between shape, texture, line, color and value. It is entirely possible finished work may be representational, but the goal is a painting which is visually pleasing and aligned with the artist's personal aesthetic.

Subject matter is the choice of each artist so participants are free to paint figure, landscape, still life, abstract or non-objective work. Stan’s own work ranges from recognizable figures to totally non-objective compositions. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced artist, you will benefit from this hands-on workshop, gaining a new perspective on how to build and design a better painting.
